January Snowflake Locker Decorations

In most of the Midwest, January is usually the longest and darkest month of the year. Usually nothing fun is happening, and there aren't any days off from school. I wanted to come up with a bright, pretty locker decoration to cheer everybody up.

I wanted to cover each girl's locker with the shiniest paper I could find. I found this silver holographic Christmas paper that was perfect. I bought it for half price after Christmas and each roll was enough to cover 6 lockers.

I measured the lockers and found they were 59 inches tall and 12 ½ inches wide. It works best to wrap the paper over and under the locker doors, so I needed to add 6 inches to my locker height measurements. I then measured 64 inches down the paper and drew a line all the way across it with a straight edge.

I then used the straight edge to measure 12 ½ inches over from the side of the paper. I made a small mark with my marker. I moved the straight edge up the wrapping paper and continued marking the paper at 12 ½ inches every two feet.

When I finished marking my paper at 12 ½ inches I then connected the dots together to make one long line. I used a permanent marker for this so the line would show up in my pictures, but you should use a pencil or ink pen.

Make sure to careful when you cut along the black line. You don't want to tear the other half of the paper since you can use it for another locker.

It is a good idea to cut an opening for the locker handle before you hang this up. I measured down 26 inches and then marked where I should cut. I left a 5 inch opening for the handle.

If you want this paper to stay on the locker for more than a few days, it is important to reinforce it with tape on the back. You need to cover all of the edges and especially around the handle. I also added a few strips across the back.

Since my mom and I take so many pictures of our squad, I though it would be nice to put a few shots of each girl's stunt pictures on each locker. I decided to make 3 different magnetic picture frames to go with each one. I used craft sticks for all of these.

I placed a craft stick on each side of the picture and then added just a drop of glue to the ends of each stick. Do not tape or glue your pictures in for this step. Just set them behind the craft sticks to use as a guide and then put them aside until later.

I placed the top and bottom sticks on top of the side ones and then set them aside to dry.

Once the frames are dry you need to paint them to match the decorations you are going to glue to them. I used white spray paint for mine. Remember to spray outside and have an adult help you with this.

I gave them one heavy coat and they dried in just a few minutes.

I wanted my picture frames to be silver, white and blue. I bought Christmas garland and confetti for this. I found all of these at Wal-Mart for just $1.00 - $3.00 each.

I also found these great sparkly foam snowflakes at Hobby Lobby to use.

The snowflakes came in several sizes and were very lightweight. Since they all had peel-off adhesive on the back, I didn't have to use glue, so they were quick and easy.

I tried several different arrangements of snowflakes before I found a pattern I liked.

When the frame was finished I turned it over, taped a picture to the back and put magnetic strips on each side of it.

For the second frame I used this blue and silver garland. Each garland had enough snowflakes to make two frames.

I ran a thick line of glue around the frame.

Then I smoothed it out to the edges of each stick.

I gently laid the snowflakes on the glue-covered sticks and lightly pressed them down.

I was very please with how these turned out.

When the frame was completely dry I turned it over, taped a picture to the back and put magnetic strips on each side.

The silver stars were the easiest to apply. Each bag contained enough stars to cover 4 frames.

I ran a thick line of glue around the frame.

Then I smoothed it out to the edges of each stick.

I placed the sticky frame in a Styrofoam plate and poured the stars on top of it.

I covered the other side of the frame with more stars and let it dry for about 15 minutes before I shook of the excess stars.

This frame also turned out great.

When the frame was completely dry I turned it over, taped a picture to the back and put magnetic strips on each side.

I used the snowflakes from this garland to fill in some of the empty spaces on the paper.

I thought it would be neat to give the snowflakes a 3 dimensional effect. I used foam craft tape that was 1/8 of an inch thick. I cut a several small pieces of it and used it to stick the white snowflakes onto the paper.

Then I cut smaller pieces of the tape and stuck it on top of the snowflakes.

I had a lot of blue snowflakes left over from making the frames. I stuck them on top of the white snowflakes. This added another layer and made the snowflakes stand out even more.

I used my stencils and cut letters out of this blue contact paper.

Since I knew these decorations would not stay on the lockers permanently, I wanted to add something else thatthe girls could have as a keepsake from this year. I found these pretty snowflake ornaments and put 3 of them on each locker decoration.

Before I added the pictures and glued the snowflakes and letters down I laid the locker decoration on the floor. I tried several different arrangements until I found one I was happy with.

Since I had everything except for the pictures glued down securely, the locker decorations went up very quickly. These locker decorations will definetly brighten up everybody's day.
