![]() Halloween Pots ![]() October is such a fun month for everyone. Many schools have their homecoming during this time. This is the time we cheerleaders can really go all out with our spirit ideas. I thought these cute customized flowerpots might look nice in everyone's lockers. When the candy is gone they can be used to hold pencils & pens, car keys, or even more candy. They were pretty inexpensive to make. The flowerpots were the biggest expense. I bought them at Wal-mart for $.53 cents a piece. I used my left over orange spray paint to paint the pots. I know the color does not look any different, but It is very important that you spray these with paint! I gave each pot 4 or 5 coats of paints. These clay pots crack very easily and the paint forms a protective layer this reduces this. They will break if you drop them, but not when you set them down or knock them over. Make sure you use a cardboard box to reduce the spray paint mist. After I sprayed several coats of paint on the outside, I flipped it over and sprayed several coats of paint on the inside. The spider webs are much easier to make that you might think. I started out by practicing on a sheet of paper. I drew the straight lines first. Then I went back and drew arched lines connecting each long line. The nice thing about spider webs is they are far from perfect. So the messier your lines are the more this looks like a real web. I added a little squiggle line for my spider to be climbing on. I used thick white craft paint for my web. I practiced drawing lines with this paint before I used it on the flower pot. After I finished my long straight lines I went back and added my little arched lines. When finished let it dry over night. The nice thing with this paint is if you really mess up, you can wipe it all off with a Kleenex. Just make sure you do this immediately and not after it dries. Don't be too picky about how your paint lines look. They dry smaller and look much better after they dry. If I have a section that I'm not too happy with I just stick a plastic spider over it. I bought a bag of 50 plastic spiders for $1.19. They looked pretty good but I thought they needed a little something extra. I poured a little bit of red craft paint onto a paper plate and then dipped each spider in it. The red paint looked like blood dripping from the spider's teeth. After you dip them in the paint let them dry for an hour before you glue them down. I used craft glue to attach these to the pot. I glued 4 - 5 spiders on each pot. You can glue as many as you'd like. The glue goes on white but always dries clear. The last thing I did was put everyone's name on each pot. If you know someone with great handwriting you can have her write each persons name on the flowerpots using puffy paint. I decided to use peel off letters. I paid $2.00 for a package and had enough for all my pots. If you don't want to spend as much money or as much time making these pots you can just stencil a picture on them. I did black pots for the boys with Frankenstein on them. I sprayed the boys pots black. Remember to use a cardboard box for this to keep the spray paint mist from getting all over everything. Since you are spraying black onto orange it may need 5 or 6 coats of paint to completely cover up the orange. Coat the inside with paint also. I bought a big sheet of Halloween stencils from Hobbie Lobbie. I cut them apart so they would fit around the flowerpot easier. I held the stencil on the pot while I stamped green craft paint onto it with a stencil brush. Remember if you mess up you can just wipe the paint off and do it over. This is another reason why you need to spray paint your flower pots first. If you don't seal the clay with spray paint then the crafts paints will soak into the pores and stain the pot. I used a cat stencil on the orange pots. I used another piece of the original stencil for this. The one place where the flowerpots are more likely to crack is the bottom. I bought a package of little felt stick on pads for the bottom of the pots. Then I stuck 4 on the bottom of each pot. I bought all kinds of Halloween candy to fill each pot. We put these in the lockers the night before the game and everyone was surprised when they found them the next morning.
