T Shirt Surgery

One way to customize your shirt, is to turn it into a tank top. You can lace it up the back to make it more fitted.

For this T-shirt surgery, you will need a T-shirt with the design printed lower. (If you buy a shirt from our store, just request that it be moved down several inches. It will be no problem for us to do this for you.)

We placed our straight edge right under the bottom of the shirt sleeve.

We drew our line in marker and then cut along the line. (Use a washable marker/pencil when you make your line.)

You need to keep the top part of the T-shirt. Cut it like this and keep the biggest rectangle to make your straps.

On the back of our tank top we marked a dot every inch. This was to mark where we wanted the eyelets to go.

It is very easy to put the eyelets on your shirt. You will have a lot of fun doing this. You should practice a few times on scrap fabric, but you shouldn't have a hard time getting them to work. Most eyelet directions tell you to punch a hole in the shirt before you put the eyelet in. With a T-shirt DO NOT punch the hole first. T-shirt fabric is thin enough that the hole makes itself when you put in the eyelet.

We bought this Dritz eyelet puncher at JoAnn Fabric. This one will work for several differnet sizes of eyelets. You can probably find one under $20.00 at any craft store.

We used purple ribbon to lace up the back.

You shouldn't add your straps until you have your shirt laced up. We pinned the straps onto the top while wearing it. Then we sewed the straps down and were finished with our shirt.

This tank top turned out great!

We have this design on an un-altered T shirt in our Cheer Store!
